Is there a proximity based lojack system that can be used for bicycles?

My bicycle was recently stolen and I feel bad because there is like no way to track it and get it back.

I was wondering if there was some kind of device I could get and put under the seat of a new bicycle so that way if it gets stolen I can just track it. I don’t need a fancy GPS lojack item. Just something that I could take my receiver, drive around the neighborhood, and have my receiver beep when I am getting closer to it.

I saw an item called KeyRinger which helps you find lost keys. This would be a perfect item if it only beeped on the receiver side rather than the transmitter side. I don’t want the thieves to know I’m coming.

I don’t know if this is a fictional item, but on Scrubs they used a lojack item to track the janitor. It was a penny size transmitter and when it got close to the receiver the receiver beeped. The closer it got the faster it beeped. Does something like this exist?

Any ideas on a proximity based tracker would be appreciated.

You best bet would be something like they use to track tagged animals in the wild. Those will xmit for a couple of months. they only transmit a short carrier pulse intermittently so the batteries last a long time. If you know what you are doing you can make a small transmitter that you could pick up over a normal radio. The only trouble is that it would be illegal. You could rig up a set of walke talkies some of them are pretty small.

As of yet there’s no commercially available GPS type tracking system for bikes. However not like an idea like that doesn’t have merit. Some time back in I read about a bicycle theft ring getting busted by a GPS location device planted in a bike frame by the authorities. The high end mountain bike then was planted at a local community collage and quickly stolen by an unsuspecting thief. They tracked the bike’s signal which lead them to a garage that had the remnants of at least 250 stolen bikes inside.
